Dining Table Head/End Seat Allowance

Extra table length needed to add one seat at the end (head) of a rectangular dining table.

400–600 mm / 16–24 in

Description

A head seat already has the table's full width as elbow room, so unlike a side seat this addition is sized by place-setting depth and knee clearance, not by shoulder width.

Notes

  • Check the leg or apron position at the table's end — a corner-leg design can block the new seat's knees; a pedestal base or inset legs avoid this.
  • Clearance behind the new end chair should still meet standard dining table wall clearance (760–1065 mm / 30–42 in).
  • Adding a seat at both ends (8 total, symmetric look) simply doubles this addition, one at each end of the table.
