Stair Riser & Tread Dimensions
Standard riser height and tread depth for comfortable, code-compliant stairs.
Description
Riser height and tread depth work together to define stair comfort and safety. A common rule of thumb is 2 × riser + tread = 610–635 mm (24–25 in). Steeper stairs (taller riser, shorter tread) save space but are less comfortable and often restricted by code.
Notes
- Riser height should be consistent (±3/16 in) within a single flight to reduce trip hazards.
