Minimum Habitable Ceiling Height

Description

Most residential codes set a minimum ceiling height for habitable rooms (living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens) with allowances for reduced height under beams or sloped ceilings. 2440 mm (8 ft) is the common developer-grade standard, while higher-end residential and commercial spaces often use 2740–3050 mm (9–10 ft).

Notes

  • Sloped ceilings (attics, dormers) may allow a portion of the room below minimum height, per local code.
  • Bathrooms, hallways, and closets often permit a lower minimum than main habitable rooms.
