Interior Door Clear Width

Minimum clear opening width for a standard interior passage door.

813 mm / 32 in minclear opening

Description

The clear width of a door opening is measured between the face of the door (open to 90°) and the door stop, not the nominal leaf size. An 813 mm (32 in) clear opening is the widely referenced minimum for general accessibility, and is typically achieved with a 914 mm (36 in) nominal door leaf.

Notes

  • Bathroom and closet doors are sometimes narrower (762 mm / 30 in leaf) but this reduces accessibility.
  • Always verify clear width, not nominal leaf width, against accessibility codes.
